Sanjay Kumar visual art

My visual language is shaped by a dialogue between India’s rich artistic heritage and global printmaking traditions. Early training at Chandigarh and Jamia Millia Islamia grounded me in classical painting techniques, while years of teaching at Maharshi Dayanand University keep my work energized by youthful inquiry. International residencies and workshops have been pivotal in expanding my aesthetic vocabulary:

  • Guanlan International Print Biennial (China)
  • Tidaholm Lithography Academy (Sweden)
  • La Ceiba Gráfica Print Studio (Mexico)
  • Tamarind Institute (New Mexico, USA)
  • Awagami Printmaking Workshops (Tokushima, Japan)
  • Collaborative studio exchanges in Italy and Germany

Each experience deepened my understanding of regional materials, from Japanese washi to Swedish limestone, and introduced new approaches to composition, surface, and scale.

My work in printmaking and painting unfolds at the intersection of disciplined craftsmanship and intuitive exploration. Rooted in rigorous academic training—from my BFA in Chandigarh to a PhD in Visual Art—I have spent decades refining traditional techniques while pursuing new pathways for expression. Each print begins as a dialogue between line, tone, and texture, revealing the tension between control and chance.

Drawing inspiration from India’s rich visual heritage and my experiences in international workshops and residencies—from North Macedonia to Sweden—I seek to create images that resonate across cultural boundaries. My lithographs and graphic works are gestures of memory and material: the etched plate becomes a palimpsest of moments, layered with the echoes of past exhibitions and the energy of live demonstrations.

As Head of the Department of Visual Arts at Maharshi Dayanand University, I engage daily with emerging artists, feeding my practice with fresh perspectives. Whether translating a fleeting impression into a monochrome print or building complex chromatic fields, my goal remains the same: to evoke curiosity, invite reflection, and connect viewers with the subtle poetry of form.

Through these prints, I aim to celebrate the continuum of artistic tradition while expanding its possibilities—offering a space where technique meets emotion, and where each mark is both a record of process and an open door to imagination.

Sanjay Kumar at Tamarind Institute - Mexico 17 july 2025

In the timeless skies between realms, where the fabric of dreams and dharma intertwine, Lord Vishnu soared—not astride Garuda, as told in ancient tales, but upon an immense, celestial owl. Its feathers shimmered like starlight and silence itself, a symbol of wisdom and mystery. The owl glided effortlessly through the twilight ether, its eyes glowing with ancient sight.

High above the sacred mountains and whispering forests, a fawn floated in the air, suspended not by wings but by a radiant aura—innocence incarnate. It drifted gently, as if cradled by a divine current, its eyes reflecting the cosmos, its breath mingling with the winds of destiny.

Beneath this celestial vision, emerging into the foreground of existence, was a human hand—elegant and still, reaching upward from the earth. Upon the palm rested a golden orb, pulsing with subtle light like a captured sun or the karmic seed of all creation. Beside it bloomed a single lotus bud, yet to unfurl, holding within it the promise of awakening.
